After six days of games, Troy came out on top of the Dixie O-Zone Alabama State Tournament in Fairhope on Thursday as they coasted to a 12-5 win over White Plains.

Troy cruised through the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record.

“These kids have been played a lot together,” head coach Derek Wilkes said. “They know what each other can do and the coaches know what they can do and hopefully put them in the best situation we can put the in. I’m just proud of them.”

Against White Plains, Troy leapt out to a 7-0 lead with four runs in the first and three in the second. Another run in the third padded the advantage and would give Troy enough cushion for the victory.

In the first, Reed Jinright was hit by a pitch to start the frame and stole second base one pitch later. After a strikeout, Jinright stole third and scored on a White Plains throwing error. Hunter Reeves reached on a fielding error. Graham Wilkes then singled and was followed by Carson Tucker’s RBI single. The third White Plains error of the inning allowed two more runs to cross to give Troy the 4-0 lead.

Dawson Hamlin lined the first pitch of the second inning over the center field fence. 5-0 Troy.

Spencer Floyd would reach base and score on a wild pitch. Tucker then walked before Wood Jinright grounded a ball that was misplayed by the shortstop. Reeves’ single scored Tucker. Troy led 7-0.

“We played some very good teams,” Wilkes said. “It says a lot about the depth of this team because each game someone new came through with a big play.”

Jumir Lampley’s RBI single in the third put Troy up 8-0.

White Plains blasted a three-run home run in the fourth to creep closer but Troy answered with a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth. White Plains would score two more in the bottom of the sixth but would prove insufficient as Troy held on for the 12-5 win.

For the championship game, Tucker and Wilkes led the way with 3-for-3 efforts. Lampley was 2-for-3 while Hamlin was 2-for-2 with three RBIs.

Wood Jinright was 1-for-3 and Reeves finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Hamlin picked up the win on the mound for Troy as he pitched five innings allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Cole Little closed things out tossing the final inning.

Troy will now travel to Cleveland, Miss., for the Dixie O-Zone World Series July 28-Aug. 2. Troy will play the state winner from South Carolina at 6 p.m. On Saturday.

“We’re not going up there just happy to be there,” Wilkes said. “We are going up there to win it.”

The was greeted by a police escort into the Troy Parks and Recreation Center where they were addressed by Mayor Jimmy Lunsford.

Lunsford said he was proud of the team and is certain they will represent the city well.

Troy outscored its opponents 42-18 in the five state tournament games.
