Pike Lanes in Troy will host a benefit party for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program of Pike County from 1 until 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28.

And it will be an “all you can bowl party” that includes shoes and a hotdog and hamburger with chips and a drink for only $10 for children under 12 and $25 for adults.

Those who wish to support Big Brothers Big Sisters but don’t bowl are invited come watch all the fun and enjoy the hamburger or hotdog meal for $2.50.

Melinda Conner, Big Brother Big Sister activities coordinator, said the funds raised by the benefit bowl will be used for Bigs activities throughout the year.

“Right now we have 80 matches and we also have 100 children who a waiting for a match,” Conner said.

“While these children are waiting and hoping for a match, we don’t want them to think they have been forgotten. So, we plan several activities for them and those activities are very special to them. Funds from the Benefit Party at Pike Lanes will be used for those activities.”

Conner said there is always a need for volunteers to help out at Big Brothers Big Sister of Pike County.

“With 100 children waiting for a match, we have great need for people who are willing to give just a little of their time to a child who wants and needs a ‘Big” in their life,” Conner said. “We have a school-based program and a community-based program that offer a choice to our Bigs. In the school-based program, all the mentoring takes place in the school and the required time commitment is one hour a week.

Those who participate in the community-based program may choose activities outside of the school setting and are asked to spend at least four hours a month with their little brother or sister.”

To qualify as a mentor for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, one must be at least 18 years of age, participate in an interview, provide references and submit to a background check.

“The requirements are made in the interest of the children and for their protection,” Conner said.

Sponsors of the Benefit Party at Pike Lanes are the Pike County Cattlemen’s Association, Food World, Frito Lay, Haynes Ambulance, Julia’s Restaurant, Kelly Foods, Pepsi Company, Piggly-Wiggly Highway 231, Rick’s Sales and Services, Sunshine Tens, City of Troy Fire Department, WTBF and B&B Inflatables.
