Charles Calkins

Mr. Charles Rendell Calkins, age 91 of Troy, Died Saturday September, 6, 2008 it Troy.
Memorial Services will be held Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Troy with Reverend Bo Weed Officiating.
Mr. Calkins was born in Newbern, Alabama on July 1, 1917. He attended elementary school in Newbern and graduated from Greensboro High School. He attended Birmingham Southern University where he received a Bachelor of Music Degree. On June 5, 1952 he received his Masters of Arts from Columbia University in New York.
He taught music in several different schools before joining the Music faculty at Troy State University in 1960. He retired from Troy State in 1982. While on the staff of Troy State University he was a member of Phi Mu Alpha, Phi Delta Kappa and Gamma Theta. He was also a member of the Troy Music Club. A Member of the Southside Baptist Church and was the church organist for many years. He also played the piano at nursing homes until he became disabled.
During World War II he served in the Signal Corp of the U.S. Army. Most of his tour he was stationed in Alaska.
Mr. Calkins was preceded in death by his Father Charles R. Calkins, his mother Mrs. Willie Fagan Calkins.
He is Survived by a cousin, Ed Avery of Havana, Al and other Cousins in West Alabama.
The Family Wishes to Thank Noble Manor it Troy for the superior care administered with compassion for the time Mr. Calkins was a Resident.
