Eight area athletes land on ASWA All-State baseball list

The Alabama Sports Writers Association released its All-State baseball team over the weekend that included eight area athletes.

Pike Liberal Arts led the way with four selections as well as head coach Butch Austin being named AISA Coach of the Year.

The AISA Class 3A state champions were well represented with catcher Blake Floyd, outfielder Nick McLaughlin, and shortstop Chandler Avant all named to the AISA team. Second baseman Lawson Stewart was named as an honorable mention.

“It’s a great honor for these kids,” Ausitn said. “I got what I got because of their hard work.”

It was Austin’s third Coach of the Year award this year, which includes being named The Messenger’s All-Area Coach of the Year last week.

Floyd was Pike’s defensive leader behind the plate and led the team with 12 doubles.

McLaughlin batted .398 this season while Avant turned in a .417 average.

Stewart was the Patriots ace on the mound in their championship season.

“I’m proud of these guys and the year they had,” Austin said.

Charles Henderson’s first baseman Joey Denison and second baseman Jalin Lawson were named to the Class 5A squad while pitcher Tripp Blackmon was tagged as an honorable mention.

Denison his five home runs this season with a team-high 52 RBI.

Lawson batted .419 and has signed to play with Central Alabama Community College next season.

Goshen’s Carlton Bean was named to the Class 2A team.

Bean turned in a ridiculous .522 batting average with 32 stolen bases and 12 doubles for the Eagles.

Goshen’s Racheal Senn and Shelby Vinson were named to the ASWA Class 2A All-State softball team on Saturday. Dee Hughes and Amy Warrick were named Coaches of the Year.
