When you want good home cooking, there is no better place to find it than at a church supper or a dinner on the ground.

Maybe that’s why church cookbooks are favorites among those who like to cook and those who like to eat.

Now, there is a new cookbook available that contains the favorite recipes of some of the area’s best cooks, the women of Henderson Baptist Church.

Charles Wilson, church Sunday school superintendent, said the women of the church came together in an effort to preserve simple, everyday recipes that are easy to prepare and to help raise money to furnish the kitchen in the new fellowship hall of Henderson Baptist Church.

"The women of our church complied "Henderson’s Home Cooking" and it is filled with the favorite recipes of our good cooks," Wilson said. "They dedicated the cookbook to the future generations of Henderson Baptist Church, because they are the future of our church and our community."

Wilson said the cookbooks are available for $10 each and my be purchased from any of the women of the church or by calling 484-3568, 484-9266 or 484-3358.

The cookbook features such favorites as Monett Richburg’s Hot Mushroom Turnovers,

Granny Baker’s Soup and Ricky Vinson Cajun Blackeye Peas.

There is also a special diabetic and fat-free recipe section.

"There are so many good recipes that are easy to fix that you’ll be pleasantly surprised," Wilson said. "We hope that everyone will support the efforts of our church ladies. They have done an outstanding job with the cookbook and I know everyone will enjoy it and get a lot of good use from it."

Wilson said Henderson Baptist Church has occupied a prominent place in the community since 1849.

"A group gathered and officially organized and called themselves Union Baptist Church," Wilson said. "The ladies in the church have been used by the Lord in various capacities and they continue to play a vital role in the church. The cookbook is just another way they are involved in helping our church to grow and meet the needs of our membership."
