After leaving spring with just two quarterbacks on the roster, the Troy Trojans have now added a fifth quarterback in Houston Christian transfer Montana Wells.

Goose Crowder and Tucker Kilcrease were the only signal callers Troy had on the roster during spring practices but now boast five. After the spring, former Gardner-Webb quarterback Matthew Caldwell transferred to Troy and freshman signee Caleb McCreary from Montgomery-Catholic has now joined the team during summer workouts, as well.

Wells brings a 6-foot-5-inch, 205-pound frame to the Troy quarterback room after redshirting his freshman season at Houston Christian in 2023. He’s a Magnolia, Texas, native that threw for 1,830 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior, earning All-District and All-State honors along with being named the Houston Public High School Quarterback of the Year. His father, James Wells, played receiver at Rice in the 1980s.

Caldwell, an Auburn native, also boasts a large frame at 6-foot-4-inches and 203 pounds. Caldwell played for current Troy Director of High School Relations Adam Winegarden at Auburn High School, throwing for 1,856 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior.

Caldwell started his college career at Jacksonville State, completing 14-of-30 passes for 136 yards as a true freshman in 2021. He transferred to Gardner-Webb in 2022 and threw for 374 yards and a touchdown in six games. In 2023, Caldwell earned the starting quarterback job, completing 81-of-128 passes for 709 yards and five touchdowns in four games before an injury sidelined him.

McCreray, a Wetumpka native, was a Class 4A Back of the Year finalist as a senior at Montgomery-Catholic last year, leading his team to a State Championship. The 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pounder threw for 9,549 yards and 125 touchdowns during his high school career along with rushing for 2,607 yards and 39 more touchdowns. He earned All-State honors three times and was the MVP of the 4A State Championship Game.
