- The eagerly awaited Vidalia onions have arrived and are ready for pickup at Murphree Park or to be delivered. The Vidalia onion sale is a fundraising project of the Troy Exchange Club. With the help of her grandson, Donna McLaney Jones, club member, delivered a truck load of the sweet onions on Wednesday to those who had placed orders. Check at Murphree Park for possible availability.
I’m the bulb-shaped onion, I grow underground,
All the year round, in every town I am found.
That little nursery rhyme must have been written about Vidalia onions, and, perhaps, with Troy, Alabama in mind.
Each year the Troy Exchange Club has an onion sale, But not just “any” onion sale. A Vidalia onion sale.
And, those who ordered the queen of all onions will be excited to know that the onions are in town and ready for pickup at Murphree Park or by delivery.
Jerry Beckett, Troy Exchange Club president, said this year the club ordered 7,000 pounds of Vidalia onions and all are sold or spoken for.
“We ordered a few extras and some of the Exchange Club members might have some extras,” Beckett said. “Those who didn’t place an order are encouraged to drop by Murphree Park today to inquire.”
The Troy Exchange Club uses the dollars raised by the onion sale for the club’s scholarship program and lends support to help organizations including the Child Advocacy Center and SavA Life in Troy and several youth and civic organizations.
