‘Miles For Smiles’ Sunday at rec center

“The Miles for Smiles” 5K Fun Run/Walk for Colon Cancer Awareness is set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Troy Recreation Department.

Runners, walkers and supporters of all ages are encouraged to participate. The run will start at the playground area.

No prior registration is required. However, Melissa Adams Ingram, Troy Police Department and leader of the local Women in Blue Awareness Campaign, said donations are greatly needed and appreciated for the Cancer Wellness Foundation, which is dedicated to bringing greater awareness to colon cancer.

Ingram said, according to the American Cancer Society, colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women. About 140-thousand American are diagnosed with colon cancer every year. This year, it is expected to cause more than 52,000 deaths.

There are currently more than one million cancer survivors in the United States. However, screening is one of the most preventable and treatable ways to survive colon cancer.
