Troy Basketball signees earn Conference Player of the Year honors

Both of Troy women’s basketball’s signees from the early signing period in November, Adriana Jones and Fortuna Ngnwao, have been named Player of the Year in their conferences.

Jones was named ACCC Player of the Year for Shelton State after averaging 18.1 points, 3.3 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. She helped lead Shelton State to an NJCAA South District Championship, scoring 22 points in the championship game.

Jones played her high school career at Greensboro High School, averaging 22.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, two assists and 1.7 steals per game as a senior, earning all-state honors.

Ngnwao earned ACCAC Player of the Year honors for Cochise College for the second straight year after averaging 16.9 points, 2.1 steals, 0.8 blocks and 11.4 rebounds per game. At 6-foot, Ngnawo helped lead her school to an NJCAA Region I Championship, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the championship game.

Ngnwao is a native of Cameroon and as a freshman at Cochise College she earled JUCO All-American honors and was ACCAC Player of the Year, as well. As a freshman, she tallied 13.3 points, 9.8 rebounds, 1.1 blocks, one assist and 1.8 steals per game leading the entire country in offensive rebounds.

“We signed Adriana ‘Speedy’ and Fortuna in November when their sophomore / junior college seasons were just beginning,” Troy coach Chanda Rigby said. “We felt they would both be exceptional players, and this was more than confirmed when each of them was named player of the year from their respective regions. Both players are humble, hard-working and great teammates. We are so thankful they will be with us in Troy soon.”
