In an article published by ESPN on Tuesday, it was revealed that Troy junior receiver Chris Lewis is battling osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.

Lewis was diagnosed with the cancer before Troy’s game against Duke in the Birmingham Bowl after having suffered with lingering knee issues throughout the season. A scan of his knee revealed a malignant bone tumor behind his knee. Still, Lewis – after being cleared by doctors – played in the Birmingham Bowl.

Lewis is currently undergoing an aggressive 10-week chemotherapy plan to decrease the likelihood of the cancer spreading before having surgery to remove the tumor, which isn’t attached to the bone. Lewis says he still plans to play football after beating the cancer.

“If I can play, I’m playing,” Lewis told ESPN. “It just really depends on what kind of recovery I have and how long that I have to recover before the season. If they clear me right before the season, I may sit out so my body can be in the best condition. If I have some months to train and get my body ready, I’ll be out there.”

Lewis led Troy in receiving last season and earned All-Sun Belt honors, routinely making highlight reel catches during the season.
