Pike County senior Markelis Hobdy signs with Birmingham Southern

On Friday, Pike County High School senior Markelis Hobdy signed to play college football at Birmingham Southern College.

Hobdy said that it was a dream of his to be able to play college football.

“It feels great, honestly. Not too many people get to play in college, so it’s a blessing to be a part of this moment and to be able to go on this journey,” he said. “I won’t let anyone down and I know my family and the community are proud of me. It just feels great and it’s an honor.”

Hobdy is was an All-Messenger linebacker for the Bulldogs. As a junior, he led PCHS with 104 tackles, 19 tackles-for-loss and three interceptions. Despite batting injuries as a senior, Hobdy still tallied 67 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss and three sacks in eight games.

Hobdy made his decision to sign with Birmingham Southern after taking a visit to the school.

“What impacted my decision was based on the visit I took in January,” he said. “The coaching staff made me feel like I was at home the two days I was up there. I enjoyed myself and if elt like that was the right choice for me.”

Hobdy, who plans to major in business marketing, intends to continue to have success on and off the field.

“My goal is to be successful in football but also academically wise, too,” he emphasized. “I’m known as a student-athlete and I plan on getting my degree and moving on to have success in life.”
