Troy men, women close out regular season

This weekend, the Troy Trojans men’s and women’s basketball teams wrapped up the regular season.

The women’s team (19-10, 15-3) throttled rival South Alabama Jaguars by a score of 108-71 on Friday night. Troy dominated the game from start to finish, shooting 53 percent from the field, while holding USA to 41.9 percent shooting. Troy also owned the boards, outrebounding South Alabama 47-33. Troy also forced 21 turnovers and scored 29 points off those turnovers.

Makayia Hallmon led Troy with 21 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Tai’Sheka Porchia tallied 17 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Ja’Mia Hollings earned a double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and two steals. Leilani Guion came off the bench to score 18 points, while Leilani Augmon scored 10 points.

The Trojans now head to Pensacola, Fla., for the Sun Belt Confernece Tournament. As the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Troy earns a double bye and will play in the quarterfinals of the tournament on March 8 in a game that will stream on ESPN+.

Meanwhile, the men’s team (20-11, 13-5) lost its season finale by a score of 82-79 to Texas State in overtime. The Bobcats outscored Troy 11-8 in the overtime period to secure the win.

Troy shot 46.3 percent from the field, while Texas State shot 46 percent. Troy was outrebounded 42-33 and the Trojans turned the ball over 16 times, while forcing 17 Texas State turnovers.

Tayton Conerway led Troy with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals, while Myles Rigsby tallied 12 points, six rebounds and two steals. Aamer Muhammad scored 11 points and Christyon Eugene totalled 10 points, four rebounds, one block and one steal.

Despite the loss, Troy heads into the Sun Belt Conference Tournament this week as the No. 3 seed with a double bye. The Trojans will play in the quarterfinals on March 9 at 5 p.m.
