Dr. Eric Mackey, Alabama State Superintendent and Angela Martin, Deputy State Superintendent recently visited Banks School.

During the visit, they observed and participated in BARR lessons (Building Assets Reducing Risk). Tammy Calhoun, Banks School assistant principal, said BARR is a program that concentrates on building relationships between students and students with teachers. BARR is designed to addresses the social and emotional needs of students.

“Banks began implementing the BARR program, after receiving the CHANCE grant in 2022,” Calhoun said. “It was an honor to have Dr. Mackey show interest in what we are doing. It was wonderful seeing him interact with our students, and it was a privilege to have the opportunity to host the State Superintendent at Banks School.”
