Troy hires new outside linebackers and tight ends/tackles coaches

On Friday, Troy University announced the hiring of new outside linebackers coach Chris Boone and tight ends and offensive tackles coach Kevin Reihner as first-year head coach Gerad Parker continues to fill out his coaching staff.

Boone comes to Troy after spending the past two runs as defensive coordinator at Samford, helping the Bulldogs to 17 wins over the past two years. Boone played college football at Jones County Junior College and Southern Miss as a linebacker before jumping into the coaching ranks. He brings coaching experience at the FCS, Division II, junior college and FBS levels.

Boone started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Southern Miss from 1996 and went on to make stops at Arkansas-Monticello, Pearl River Community College and UAB. He also coached high school football at Wayne County in Mississippi in 1998.

In 2004, Boone became the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at East Central Community College after serving as an assistant coach at Nicholls State for two years. From 2006 until 2010, Boone was assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at UT-Martin. Boone’s defenses during that span were some of the best defense in school history with his 2010 defense being ranked 12th nationally in FCS.

He served as defensive coordinator at Jacksonville State from 2011 until 2012 before becoming associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Northwestern State in 2013.

He coached the defensive line and special teams at Samford in 2014 nad became assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Murray State from 2015 to 2018.

Boone returned to his alma mater, Southern Miss, to coach the defensive line and safeties in 2018 until 2020 when he took over as defensive coordinator at JUCO power East Mississippi Community College. He returned to Samford in 2021.

Reihner comes to Troy, where he will coach both tight ends and offensive tackles, after serving one year as a senior offensive analyst at Notre Dame alongside Parker. The three years prior to that Reihner was offensive line coach at Old Dominion. Reihner brings FCS, FBS Group of 5 and FBS Power 5 coaching experience to Troy.

Reihner played college football at Stanford before transferring to Penn State as a graduate transfer. Reihner began his coaching career as offensive quality control coach at Fordham and then became a graduate assistant at Wake Forest in 2017. He also served as tight ends coach at FCS Delaware before becoming a graduate assistant at Penn State in 2019.

Reihner went on to coach the offensive line at Old Dominion from 2020 through 2021 before being elevated to offensive coordinator in 2022, becoming the youngest offensive coordinator in the entire country at the time. He took on a position at Notre Dame as a senior offensive analyst.
