The Troy Trojans women’s basketball team (1-7) snapped their seven-game losing streak to start the 2023-2024 season on Saturday with a 71-59 home win over UT-Martin.
Troy’s ferocious defense forced a staggering 26 turnovers with 16 of those coming in the way of steals, while Troy also scored 26 points off turnovers. In a rare occurrence, Troy was actually outrebounded 38-35 by UT-Martin but Troy scored 18 second-chance points off rebounds compared to UT-Martin’s seven.
“It’s great to be in Trojan Arena tonight for our first win,” Troy Coach Chanda Rigby said. “They dug in and aimed to get better every single day and I’m glad it showed. This is the first time this team has gotten to enjoy a win together, so we want to make sure we can celebrate it. These players need to understand that this is Tory Basketball and what we do as Trojans. We fight for wins. We got some more tough road games coming up, so we have to keep getting better and grab some more wins.”
Troy also shot 41.5 percent from the field, while UT-Martin shot 40.4 percent. The Trojans were led by Nia Daniel with 15 points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks, while Tai’Sheka Porchia added 13 points, two rebounds and one steal. Makayia Hallmon also chipped in with 12 points, two assists and two steals. Ja’Mia Hollings narrowly missed a double-double with nine points, eight rebounds and two steals. Shaulana Wagner dished five assists and Sharonica Hartsfield earned four steals in the win.
Troy is back on the road on Sunday, Dec. 17, at Iowa State at noon.
