Troy wraps up Trojan Classic with win over Grambling State

The Troy Trojans men’s basketball team (3-3)celebrated Thanksgiving with a 80-67 win over the Grambling State Tigers on Friday, Nov. 24, capping off the Trojan Classic.

The two sides slugged it out back-and-forth in the first half with Troy eventually taking a 36-34 lead into halftime. The Trojans were propelled by senior Christyon Eugene’s 15-point outburst in the opening half.

The second half was all Troy, outscoring Grambling 44-33 in the final half and leading by as many as 13. Troy had a good night from the field, shooting 45.5 percent, while the Tigers also shot 45.5 percent from the field. The Troy defense, though, forced 14 turnovers and scored 14 points off turnovers. Troy also won the rebound battle 37-29 and scored 42 points in the paint.

Eugene filled up the stat sheet with 23 points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals, while Jackson Fields tallied 13 points, five rebounds, five steals and two blocks. The points and steals were career-highs for Fields. Tayton Conerway, Aamer Muhammad and Myles Rigsby scored eight points each, as well. Conerway dished three assists, while Rigsbys grabbed two rebounds, had two assists, blocked one shot and earned a steal. A total of seven Trojans scored at least six points in the win.

Troy is back on the road Monday night at 6 p.m. for a matchup with Eastern Kentucky that will stream live on ESPN+. On Friday, Troy will return to Trojan Arena to open December against SIU-Edwardsville.
