Janice Folmar Whitman was born in 1938 to Riley and Floyce Folmar from whom she learned the importance of family.  She was a 1956 graduate of Goshen High School.  She graduated from the University of Alabama in 1960 with a major in journalism and received her masters from Troy State University in 1977.

In 1964, she met and married the love of her life, James Robert Whitman, who predeceased her in 2015. A devoted wife, her most important role in life was to love and support him. She also placed great value on being a great mom to her children.  She often noted that it was more important to spend time with her children than to have a spotless house.  When she became a grandmother, she exemplified the perfect balance of support without interference.

A gifted and dry-witted teacher, Janice invested in the children of Troy for decades, teaching English at Charles Henderson High School following a teaching job at Goshen High School. She served as the chairman of the English Department at CHHS. She also taught the Joy Sunday School Class at First Baptist for more years than anyone really remembers. She loved to teach God’s word and loved the fellowship of her class.
