The Colley Senior Complex in Troy will be the host site for a “ForestHER – On Fire” workshop on March 3 and 4.

The hands-on workshop will focus on teaching women landowners about Alabama’s historic fire regimes and how prescribed fire can and should be used as an effective land management tool, said Cathy Jorgensen, a member of the  Pike Chapter of TREASURE  Forest.

“This program is tailored to women who love nature and enjoy learning about the natural world,” Jorgensen said. “You do not have to own a lot of land. If you have even one acre, you will benefit from this workshop.”

ForestHER Workshops are conducted throughout the state.

“One of the goals of the ForestHER workshop is equipping women with the knowledge and skills for successful land management whether they inherited the land or purchased by choice,” Jorgensen said.

The fee for the ForestHER workshop is $65 and includes a workbook to keep, breaks, lunch and dinner on March 3 (from 8:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.) and breakfast and lunch on March 4 (from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.). Seating is limited so preregistration is required.

Most of day one will be indoors learning about fire behavior, safety and management techniques. The remaining portion of the class will be spent in the woods applying what has been learned in the classroom. Weather permitting, participants will see a prescribed fire.

ForestHER is a women-focused workshop series designed and led by Auburn University Forestry and Wildlife Sciences professor Becky Barlow.

The March 4 workshop will meet in the downstairs room at the Colley Senior Complex located at 715 Elm Street in Troy
