PCBOE expresses concern about proposed statewide school calendar

At its Monday meeting, the Pike County Board of Education approved a resolution declaring the week of February 22-19 FFA Week and acknowledge the outstanding performance of the Goshen High School FFA and the student organization’s commitment to agriculture and agribusiness.

Dr. Mark Bazzell, superintendent of Pike County Schools, congratulated the FFA members and their advisors, Jamie Rich and Cody Eiland, on jobs well done.

Rich said the FFA built and delivered picnic tables for the elementary schools at Goshen, Banks and Pike County and has plans for several agricultural awareness and conservation programs in recognition of National FFA Week.

Bazzell expressed concerns about a proposed new calendar for Alabama schools that could mean longer summer vacation and longer school days.

In other new business, the board:

• Approved a request to match the ALSDE supplement given to teachers who have earned National Board Certification and other similar certifications and are employed by Pike County Schools.

• Approved a request to offer a drivers’ education program for Pike County School System students in the summer of 2020.

• Approved permission for OCAP Brundidge Head Start Center to use a bus on March 2 for annual kindergarten visit to Pike County Elementary School.

In personnel action, the board:

• Accepted the resignation of Crystal Davis Jensen, bus driver, effective February 7, 2020.

• Accepted the recommendation of Dr. Mark Bazzell, to terminate a probationary support employee.

• Approved the request to employ Thurston Lee, heath teacher at Pike County High School.

•Approved the request to employ Kimberly Kersey, special education teacher at Goshen Elementary School.

• Approved request to employ Barbara Seller, second grade teacher at Goshen Elementary School.

• Approved catastrophic leave for Kristin Kelly, teacher at Goshen High School.

• Approved volunteer status for Baylor Barnes, soccer at Goshen High School.
