Christmas is almost upon us but a last-minute shopping event in downtown Troy on Sunday will give one last push for holiday shopping and cheer.

“This is a last Christmas hoorah for the season,” said Leigh Anne Windham with the City of Troy.

In addition to sales on Christmas merchandise at downtown stores, there will also be plenty of Christmas fun on the Square.

Shelia Jackson and friends will be on the Square from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. to sing Christmas Carols and entertain shoppers, while Santa will stop by from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for visits and pictures.

“This is the first time we’ve come to do Christmas Carols on the Square,” Jackson said. “We want to invite everybody downtown to do their last-minute shopping and listen to some nice music from the band and some of the other singers. This event kind of wraps up the Christmas season, and we’re just looking forward to a wonderful time.”

Barbara Ward of Rustic Linen said the store, which now also hosts Family Ties, will be having a sale of 20 percent off Christmas items as part of the event.

“It’s been a great season for both of us,” Ward said. “We’re thankful for all of our customers. Now we’re at a point where it’s getting down to the nitty-gritty and there’s not a whole lot of time left. We have some great deals left and beautiful Christmas décor; it’s a great time for customers to fill in on what they need.”

And there will also be a contest component to the shopping holiday.

“When you make a purchase at participating businesses, you can enter to win a basket filled with lots of goodies donated by our downtown businesses,” Windham said. “You can enter with every single purchase made.”

If it rains during the event, Shelia and friends and Santa will be moved into the old Wise building next to Momma Goldberg’s.
