Dr. Fred B. Davis of Troy, died on Thursday, December 5, 2019. Funeral services were held at Dillard Funeral Home of Troy at 11 am on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Dillard Funeral Home in Troy.

Fred was born on August 12, 1938 in Hearne, TX, and spent his childhood and adolescence in Calvert, TX. He graduated from Calvert High School and did his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Georgia. He was a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Sigma Tau Delta, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Beta Kappa honor societies.

He was employed in retail management and served a drafted enlisted term in the U.S. Army prior to becoming an educator. He joined the faculty of Troy State University in September of 1970, and served with distinction in numerous capacities prior to his retirement in December of 2003, most notably as Chair of the Department of English and Foreign Languages, Faculty Representative for Athletics, and director of General Studies, retiring as Provost. In recognition of his exceptional ser-vice and dedication, he became the first employee in the history of the University to be awarded an honorary degree.

He is survived by his sister: Dora Loria of Bryan, TX; brothers: Dave (Vicki) of San Antonio, TX, Don (Sharon) of El Paso, TX, Rick (Janet) of Potter, NE; and several nephews, nieces, and their children.

Honorary pallbearers are the faculty and staff, current and emeriti, of Troy University, and the McDonalds Coffee Klatch. Memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice or to the Fred B. Davis Pre-Law Scholarship at Troy University.
