STEW SALE: Salvation Army cooks up special recipe

Kim May, director of the Pike County Salvation Army Service Center in Troy, wouldn’t say that the center’s camp stew is the best in the country but she didn’t say that it’s not.
“We leave that up to somebody else,” May said with a smile. “But we think our camp stew is mighty good.”
The Salvation Army camp stew is made from Carter Sanders’ recipe and he is yet to disclose the secret that sets it apart. However, Sanders said his camp stew is camp stew.
“If the stew has green peas and/or corn in it, it is not camp stew, it’s Brunswick stew and that’s not close to the same thing,” Sanders said.
Today, from noon until the pot is empty, the Pike County Salvation Army let its customers decide just how good its 100 percent camp stew is.
The Salvation Army’s camp stew will be on sale from noon until at the Service Center and Thrift Store at 509 South Brundidge Street in Troy.
Those who wish to reserve their order may do so by calling 808-1069. However, May said the Salvation Army volunteers have cooked more than 200 quarts above the number that was ordered.
“We cooked more than we had orders for at our late winter camp stew sale and sold them all,” May said. “So, we hope to be as successful with our fall camp stew sale.”
The camp stew sale supports the many services and programs offered through the Pike County Salvation Army.
“What we hope people know and remember is that donations to the Pike County Salvation Army help people in need right here in our community,” she said. “We greatly appreciate the support of the people of Pike County.”
