Second half gets away from Trojans in loss to Oxford

OXFORD, AL – Charles Henderson High held their own with Class 6A Oxford for much of the first half, but the Yellow Jackets scored almost at will for the remainder of the contest to run away with a 49-14 win Friday night in Oxford’s Lane Thweatt Jr. Stadium.

CHHS and Oxford were tied at 14-14 with 0:05 seconds left in the first half, when quarterback Revy Higgns, a junior, threw a touchdown pass to Rock Taylor for a  21-14 halftime lead.

Oxford, ranked 6th in the state and improving to 4-0 on the season in Class 6A, then scored on four of their next five possessions in the second half for the win.

The Class 5A Trojans, falling to 1-2 on the season, jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when senior linebacker J.B. Sanders forced a fumble, the Trojans recovered, and then went 25 yards on three plays. Senior running back Jonathan Carter took it in from 1-yard out, Hayden Bush added the PAT and the Trojans led 7-0 with 9:46 to play in the first quarter.

Oxford responded with a 69-yard scoring drive, with Jonovan Carlisle scoring from 5-yards away, Andrew Warhurst added the extra point, and it was 7-7 with 7:33 to go in the first quarter.

The Yellow Jackets scored again on their next series with Carlisle taking it in again for a 5-yard touchdown, Warhurst kicked and it was 14-7 at the 3:00 minute mark of the first quarter.

CHHS tied the score at 14-14 on their first possession of the second quarter when Carter raced around the left end for a 10-yard TD carry, Bush kicked and the score was tied with 8:31 to play in the first half.

It appeared the score would be tied at the half, but with less than 10 seconds showing Higgins sprinted to the CHHS 17 yard line for a 35-yard gain, and on the next play threw a pass to Taylor and it was 21-14 at the half.

Oxford intercepted a CHHS pass to open the second half, and four plays later Higgins ran in for a 15 yard TD and the Yellow Jackets led 28-14.

Higgins, who finished the night with two touchdown runs and two touchdown passes, sprinted down the left sideline 41 yards for a score with 6:07 to go in the third quarter for a 35-14 lead, and one series later found X’Zavian Britt open for a 12-yard TD pass play and a 42-14 advantage with 1:30 to go in the third quarter.

CHHS threw another interception to open the fourth quarter, and three plays later Trequon Feagans went 25 yards for a touchdown and the 49-14 lead with 10:55 to go in the game.

Unofficial stats had CHHS running back Jonathan Carter picking up 31 yards on 15 carries and scoring two touchdowns, quarterback Pooka Jones was 12 of 28 for 138 yards and two interceptions, while junior backup quarterback Cameron Foley completed six of 10 passes for 76 yards.

Higgins had a big night for Oxford, rushing for 145 yards on 10 carries and scoring two rushing touchdowns while passing for 98 yards, completing 8 of 18, for two touchdowns.

Carlisle gained 94 yards on 19 carries also for the Yellow Jackets.

CHHS returns to action next Friday night when they travel to Beauregard for a Class 5A, Region 2 matchup.
