“Challenge 14” has nothing to do with the United States space program.

But, it’s a blast, said Wiley White, Johnson Center for the Arts exhibition coordinator.

“Challenge 14” is a five-state juried art show with artists from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Florida invited to participate.

“The deadline to enter is before midnight, September 2 so there is still time to enter,” White said. “The exhibition dates will be November 13, 2019, through January 4, 2020. We hope to have a good representation of local artists.”

Photographs are to be submitted for acceptance to the show. Artists whose work is accepted for Challenge 14 will be notified by September 23.

“The five-state juried show is a uniquely challenging show in that it limits the artwork to no more than 14 inches by 14 inches by 14 inches,” White said. “That includes the frame of 2-D work and any base that is attached to 3-D work.”

Jonah Enfinger, a local artist who participated in the JCA’s 2018 juried show, said he didn’t feel restricted by the size limitations.

“Sometimes a large piece will overshadow a small piece,” Enfinger said. “I felt like the size limitation made the show fair for everyone.”

Enfinger said Challenge 14 is a great opportunity to showcase local artists and his participation was a wonderful experience.

“It was not only an opportunity to be in a show with my peers but also my teachers from the university,” he said. “Challenge 14 is a great opportunity for local artists to participate in a juried show that includes artists from outside our state. I plan to enter again this year. Any artist would enjoy this show.”

White said at last year’s show, there was a wide variety in mediums and styles.

“It was a very interesting and enjoyable show,” White said. “Expectations for this year are very high and we look forward to another great five-state juried art show.”

Entry fees are $35 for one work, $45 for two and $55 for three. The cash awards will total $3,500, with Best of Show at $1,000, Board of Directors Award, $500 and eight individual awards of $250 each.

White said all artwork must be original and have been completed during 2017, 2018 and 2019. The artwork must be priced for sale. A commission will be retained by the JCA.
