The clock is ticking down to the last few days to register for the Summer Reading program at the Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library in Brundidge.

Registration runs through Thursday, May 24, for pre-school through 12th graders who want to explore “A Universe of Stories.” To register or for more information, call “Tupper” at 334-735-2145.

Theresa Trawick, library director, said summer reading provides many benefits for young people.

Summer reading is encouragement for a lifelong habit, she said. Reading over the summer also helps children keep their skills up and can generate interest in the library and books.

“Studies show that for reading success to happen, access to books is critical,” Trawick said. “The public library is an excellent free resource for families to have access to books of a wide range of interests and reading levels, as well as librarians to guide children and families in selecting great books.”

Trawick said the Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library especially encourages reading for fun during the summer months and does not stress points and levels so much as interest in a topic or theme.

“Children who see reading as a treat and not a chore will feel more inclined to explore the shelves, searching for their next favorite book,” she said. “Libraries care about children and plan programs to keep them reading and learning all summer.  Whether keeping track of the amount of time they spend reading or the number of books they have read this summer, children who join the summer library program keep their minds active and enter school in the fall ready to learn and ready to succeed.”

The Summer Reading program at “Tupper” encourages reading by giving prizes to preschoolers for every 100 books read to them. Young readers can participate as an independent reader or as a family reader.

Independent readers keep track of books read during the summer by recording the title, author and number of pages.

Reading records must be turned in on or before July 6th in order to be eligible to attend the awards party.

Thursdays will be reserved for special Summer Reading activities at Brundidge Station beginning with a Glow Party on June 6. The always popular Titan Magic Show will be on June 13, Brannen’s Wild West Show on June 20 and Animal (big and small) Tales on June 27.

The month of July will feature an Alabama Historical Presentation on July 11. The 2019 Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library Summer Reading Program will end with a big splash on July 18, Splash Day.”
