Smartt named NCBWA National Hitter of the Week

The honors continue to roll in for Troy catcher Chase Smartt as he was named the National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association of (NCBWA).

Smartt becomes just the third player in school history to earn the NCBWA honor which is presented to just one hitter and one pitcher each week – Danny Collins in 2013 and Josh Dew in 2006 also took home the honor. The Troy senior was also named one of Collegiate Baseball’s National Players of the Week on Monday.

Smartt, a native of Troy, was 12-for-19 (.632) with six doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs over four games for the Trojans. He posted a 1.263 slugging percentage in addition to scoring six runs and finishing with a 1.895 OPS.

Behind Smartt’s bat, Troy went 3-1 on the week with a series win over Sun Belt East Division leader Georgia Southern and a mid-week pasting of SWAC East Division champion Alabama State. Smartt registered an extra-base hit in all four games and moved into eighth place all-time in Troy history with 42 career doubles.
