Lady Eagles begin Trojan Classic 2-0

Goshen held off a late comeback from Kinston to win the their first game of the Trojan Classic, 4-3.

In a 70-minute time capped game, Hannah Calhoun pitched the complete game for Goshen. She threw four full innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out two.

Kinston dented the scoreboard first with a two-hit, one run first inning but Goshen tripled that production in the bottom half of the inning.

Goshen’s Kate Warrick hit a double for the Eagles’ first baserunner of the game and she was driven in by a single. After Alexis McLendon reached with a single, both runners tapped home on a wild pitch.

One walk later and Kinston’s starting pitcher was pulled two outs into the game and Goshen up 3-1.

The Eagles added another run in the second inning behind Warrick’s second double of the game, this time driving in Calhoun who had just hit a double of her own. That extended the lead out to 4-1.

Calhoun pitched the game’s 1-2-3 inning in the third and put away the Bulldogs with just 20 minutes left on the timer.

Goshen couldn’t get anything going in the bottom half and, as the timer dipped below 10 minutes, Kinston began pulling back in the fourth inning.

A reach on error and single put two on for Hawthorn, who drove both in with a double to bring the Bulldogs within one.

Calhoun forced a lazy pop out to third and the Eagles survived. Goshen moved on to game two to face Brew Tech.

The Eagles found themselves down 5-4 in the late innings before scoring two unanswered runs in their 6-5 win over Brew Tech.

McLendon got the start in game two. She pitched three innings, while allowing four total runs, only two of which were earned on five hits and three walks. She struck out three batters.

Calhoun, fresh off her appearance in game one, came in and pitched the final two innings against Brew Tech. Calhoun didn’t allow a base runner in her appearance and she struck out three batters.

Calhoun and Harrison accounted for four of Goshen’s six hits. Harrison had three RBI.

The Eagles scored four runs in the first inning. After Calhoun scored the first run on an error, Harrison singled to center to drive in Brooke Bennett and Madison Campbell. McLendon came around to score on a double by Zoe Warren.

Brew Tech immediately tied the score with four runs in the top of the second inning. After both teams scored in the fourth, the Eagles scored the winning run in the fifth on a single by Warrick, allowing Calhoun to score.

The Eagles will continue play in the Trojan Classic on Saturday.
