Takeysia McFugerson, a social work major at Troy University, was recognized as the Troy Public Library’s 2018 Tutor of the Year in a ceremony Thursday afternoon.
Teresa Colvin, children and young adult librarian, congratulated McFugerson and expressed appreciation to her for her dedication and commitment to the library’s tutoring program.
“Takeysia is very dependable and does a great job working with her student in all subject areas,” Colvin said. “She is always prepared and is great at motivating her student. Takeysia is very deserving of this award. We, at the Troy Public Library, would like to thank her for all she does to help support the tutoring program.”
McFugerson is from Brewton and came to Troy University to be a majorette in the South of the South Marching Band.
“After I completed four years with the Sound of the South, I wanted to give back to the community,” she said. “Someone told me about the tutoring program at the Troy Public Library and that was of interest to me. I wanted to work with young people and tutoring was a way that I thought I could really help a young person.”
McFugerson has been a tutor for two years and Ivye Metcalf said she has learned a lot and her grades have improved. McFugerson tutors Ivye in math, spelling and reading.
“She is fun,” Ivye said, glancing at McFugerson. “She makes learning fun and she teaches in a different way and makes things easy to understand.”
Ivye said she will miss her teacher but she will keep working hard and doing her best.
McFugerson said she will be sad, too, but she is confident that Ivye will continue to work hard and do well in school.
McFugerson’s plan is to attend graduate school and work for the Veterans Administration in some capacity.
“I wanted to be in the military but couldn’t because I have asthma,” she said. “But I want to serve my country so, working for the VA, I will have opportunities to help those who have served our country.”
