Troy resident competing to sing anthem at Birmingham Bowl

The Troy Trojans are headed back to the Dollar General Bowl in Mobile this postseason but one Troy resident is looking to get on the field during a different bowl game in the state.

Whitney Bowers said she has worked at the Birmingham Bowl once in the past and jumped at the chance to perform the national anthem to open the game when she saw the bowl was hosting a contest on social media.

“I live here in Troy with my husband and work as a graduate assistant with Troy Athletics,” Bowers said. “I worked in the press box with the Birmingham Bowl in 2015 and I liked their Facebook page. A few days ago I noticed they were doing a search on social media for the first time ever to find someone to sing the national anthem.”

Bowers said she was already planning to head to Birmingham to visit family, so the chance to sing at the game seemed like a fun experience to have while there.

Now Bowers is sitting at second place in the first round of voting to select the singer.

“I did my video in one take,” Bowers said. “I was in a rush to get my submission before deadline. Saturday night this last week I was scrolling through my news feed and my husband noticed that I was one of the four finalists.”

Bowers is looking for help from the community to keep her in the top two when the deadline closes Friday so she can make it to the final round of voting and hopes she can get enough votes then to make it all the way through the process.

To vote for Bowers, like or react to Bowers’ video on the Birmingham Bowl Facebook page. Voting closes at midnight Friday and the second round of voting will open December 8 at 8 a.m. and closes on December 9 at 7:59 a.m.
