On Labor Day, a 20-member church team from Troy returned from a weeklong mission trip in Morelia, Mexico. While in the city, mission team delivered a gospel message in song in much the same fashion that it will be delivered at 7 p.m. tonight on the square in downtown Troy.

Tim Sims, Hephzibah Baptist Church, said the mission team presented a concert on the square in Morelia.

“The City of Morelia has a huge downtown area with a plaza that features a gazebo much like Troy’s gazebo,” Sims said.

“One Voice” or  “Una Voz” features voices primarily from First Baptist Church of Troy, which led the mission trip to Morelia, several voices from Hephzibah Baptist Church in Troy and a few from churches outside the area.

“This was the fifth year First Baptist has led a mission trip to Morelia,” Sims said. “It was an uplifting experience to sing on the plaza. We sang familiar songs like  ‘Nothing But the Blood,” and some not so familiar, like  ‘New Jerusalem.’ The translations of the songs were displayed on a screen. We were also able to give our testimonies through an interpreter. It was a wonderful experience.”

Tonight’s “One Voice/ Una Voz” concert will be the same program that was presented and so well received in Morelia.

The mission team also had opportunities to minister to the city’s homeless people and to visit with patients in the hospital.

“Here at home, if we have a family member in the hospital, we can visit them,” Sims said. “But down there, a fence was around the hospital and there were guards. You could only go in the hospital at designated times and only for an hour or two. We were able to go into the hospital and show our concern for the patients and their families and, hopefully, lift their spirits.”

The community is invited and encouraged to attend the “One Voice/Una Voz concert at 7 p.m. tonight on the square in downtown Troy.
