Velma Folmar Hightower

Velma Folmar Hightower passed away Friday, August 17, 2018, at the remarkable age of 106. Velma was born July 29, 1912, to Joseph Leroy Folmar and Mary Emily Jackson of Goshen. She was valedictorian in the first graduating class at Goshen High School. She married Robert Louis Hightower and bore two children, Robert Roy, who died at birth, and Charlotte. They lived in Birmingham for many, many years and then moved back to the Goshen/Troy area when Louis’s health was failing. Velma enjoyed her Canasta-playing friends in Troy and being part of Park Memorial Methodist Church. Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; a son; her parents; three siblings, Rita Folmar Stroud, Edwin Owen Folmar and Henry Wilbert Folmar; and a niece, Ann Folmar. She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Goeters (Joseph), of Houston, Texas; her younger brother, Bill Folmar, of Winter Park, Florida; grandchildren, Ashley Edwards Jung (Kyle), of Manvel, Texas, and Jon Scott Edwards (Allyson), of Olympia, Washington; and great-grandchildren, Avery and Jacob Jung and Eleanor Edwards. She also leaves very dear nieces and nephews who cared for her over the many years, Joyce Folmar, Ramon and Agnes Stroud, Royce and Jane Stroud, Roy Folmar, Alice Kelley and Larry Folmar, and farther away, Billy Folmar, of Orlando, Florida, and Susan Wagner, of Bandon, Oregon. Velma’s last years were spent at Luverne Health and Rehab Nursing Home, where she continued to be a supportive and caring friend to all. Our special thanks goes to the very special staff there and with Comfort Care. Her fun sense of wit and humor and her sweet, caring nature will be missed. She was a devoted mother for 76 years. Visitation was held from 10:00 a.m. until service time Monday, August 20, 2018, at Skeen Funeral Home in Troy. Velma’s life was celebrated beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Skeen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Elam Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, where she was buried with her family, with Skeen Funeral Home directing, Serving as pallbearers were Ramon Stroud, Roy Folmar, Chris Stroud, Kyle Jung, Jacob Jung and Watson Kyzar. Honorary pallbearers were Royce Stroud and Joseph Goeters. Memorial may be made to Elam Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
