A Brundidge man asked someone for a ride early Monday morning and then demanded money from the driver, threatening that he had a gun, according to Troy police.
Otis James Guice, 48, has been arrested and charged with first-degree robbery in connection to the incident.
The incident began at approximately 4 a.m. Monday on Montgomery Street.
“Guice flagged the victim down on Montgomery Street and told him that his car was broken down and asked the victim for a ride,” said Troy Police Chief Randall Barr. “The victim agreed and allowed Guice into his car.”
Barr said Guice directed the victim to drive to North Knox Street near Rose Circle, where Guice began demanding money.
“Guice told the victim that he had a gun and demanded everything in the victim’s wallet,” Barr said. “The victim told Guice that he did not have any money in his wallet. The victim continued to drive on Knox Street until he got back to North Three Notch Street. The victim abruptly stopped the car on North Three Notch Street and ran from the vehicle, leaving
Guice inside.”
The victim was able to flag a passing motorist and call the police, Barr said.
“When the police arrived, they found the victim’s car sitting in the roadway,” Barr said. “Guice was gone and so was the victim’s phone that was left inside the car when he ran. Police saturated the area and found Guice hiding in the bed of a pickup truck on New Street. The victim’s phone was also recovered from the back of the truck.”
Guice was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Pike County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
Guice is no stranger to law enforcement, Barr said, and he also uses the name James Otis Guice. He has served time in prison for a previous conviction of first-degree robbery and first-degree sexual abuse. Guice is a registered sex offender in Alabama.
