Felony indictments issued

Over 50 indictments have been served following one of the largest grand jury sessions Pike County has seen in over a decade according to District Attorney Tom Anderson.

“It was the largest we’ve probably had in about 10 to 12 years, “ Anderson said. “ We had 200 indictments, which is about 30 percent bigger than normal, maybe even 40 percent.”

Anderson said the rest of the indictments should be made public soon as they are still in the process of serving them. The session began Wednesday, June 27, 2018, and court officials have since been seeking to issue the indictments.

Anderson said the police departments made a concerted effort to close out and turn over as many case files as possible, leading to the increased number of indictments.

The charged individuals will now be assigned to a circuit judge for the judge’s next criminal trial.

Grand jury sessions are not public – the indictments are only made public as the individuals charged with the crimes are notified of the indictment.

“No-billed” cases, cases that the grand jury decided lacked evidence to go to trial, are not made public except at the discretion of the district attorney’s office.

The individuals that have been served indictments so far have had their arraignment date set for August 30. The arraignment is where each defendant can plea guilty or not guilty.
