Honorary chair, caregiver to be named tonight at Relay

There will be a few changes tonight at the annual Relay for Life event, including the announcement of the honorary chair and caregiver of the year. It will also be at a new venue.
“We changed venues this year,” Scott said. “The idea was that the Miracle Playground will be well-suited for the community cookout celebration of victories won, for honoring and supporting those who are continuing the fight and remembering those whose battles were lost.”
The 2018 Pike County Relay for Life Board is continuing to accept nominations for the chair and caregiver awards. Nominations may be made to 334-672-1997 by Friday noon.
Scott said there will be several lap designations during the Relay walk including a backward lap and a glow-stick lap. But the Survivors Lap and the Luminary Walk are the most significant laps.
There will also be D.J. Redd and live entertainment from local musicians, and food will be available at this year’s event, something Megan Kirkland of the American Cancer Society said the board wanted to try to ensure nobody has to leave due to hunger.
“Usually either your team does food or you bring your own food, but sometimes that drives people away,” Kirkland said. “This year we’ll have volunteers coming out and grilling food to try to have that available. We just want it to be an all-around good experience.”
Door prizes and survivor shirts will also be given out at the big event. Special awards will be given for best tent decoration, the outstanding rookie team, Spirit of Relay and, of course, the fundraising awards.
The Pike County Relay for Life team and community event will begin at 6 p.m. tonight on the Miracle Playground at the Troy Sportsplex. Everyone is invited to participate.
