The news of the death of Troy Regional Medical Center physician Dr. Charles “Chuck” Wood on Tuesday cast a cloud of sadness over those who worked with Wood at the hospital and his many patients.

Dr. Elizabeth Dawson, chief of staff TRMC, said since joining the Troy Regional Medical Center staff in 2007, Dr. Wood had shown tireless dedication to his patients.

“Dr. Wood was a skilled, caring and devoted physician, beloved by the hospital staff and his patients,” Dawson said. “I have met remarkable physicians in my career but none who put medicine over self in the way that he did. I join with the Troy Regional Medical Center and the community of Troy in mourning his loss.”

Dr. Paul Dulaney joined Dawson in mourning the loss of their colleague. But Drs. Dulaney and Wood were more than colleagues. They were friends.

“I have known Dr. Wood since medical school and I have had the pleasure of spending a majority of my professional life with him as a colleague,” Dulaney said. “When he recruited me to Troy in 2011, he said, ‘Dulaney, it may take a while but we are going to make this place great.’

“Dr. Wood was a close friend and colleague. I will miss our Saturday morning chats at the hospital. He exhibited the qualities of a great physician – kindness, commitment, dedication and perseverance. These traits were evident in his professional life as well as in his personal life. He will be greatly missed by me and by the medical staff.”

Sherrill Crowe, chairman of the Troy Health Care Authority, said, too that Wood will be greatly missed.

“Everybody liked and respected, Dr. Chuck Wood,” Crowe said. “Everything I knew about him and everything I heard about him was positive because he was just that kind of guy. The hospital staff loved him and his patients loved him. He was high on everybody’s compliment list.”

Crowe said Wood was a dedicated physician and a contributing member of the Troy Health Care Authority.

“I looked forward to seeing Dr. Wood at the meetings,” Crowe said. “He had a great personality and an infectious smile. He always contributed in a positive way.”

Crowe said even after Wood was diagnosed with cancer and was in such pain, he made great contributions to the board.”

“Chuck was the embodiment of moral character; he was a pillar of strength,” Crowe said. “He came to the meetings when he didn’t feel like it and made contributions. He was an inspiration to all of us and I’m sure to all who knew him.

“Dr. Chuck Wood’s death is a tremendous loss to the hospital and the community. He contributed greatly to the hospital and its growth. Our thoughts and prayers are his family during this time of their great loss.”
