Troy Regional Medical Center began a new phase of health care for the Troy and Pike County area Thursday with the opening of the Troy Regional Senior Behavioral Care Center.

The Pike County Chamber of Commerce hosted the ribbon cutting for the senior behavioral care center, which represents an important milestone in the delivery of senior behavioral services for the region.

Ronnie Dean, Troy Regional Medical Center chief executive officer, said Troy Regional Medical Center opened in 1969 with the commitment to provide the Troy area with the highest of standards in heath care.

The opening of the Troy Regional Senior Behavioral Care Center is a continuation of that commitment, Dean said.

The $2.3 million renovation of the former maternity wing on the hospital’s second floor features an 18-bed acute inpatient geropsychiatric unit that will care for patients ages 55 and older with psychiatric diagnoses. Those diagnoses include clinical depression, suicidal thoughts or attempts, homicidal thoughts with poor impulse control, assaultive/destructive behavior and psychiatric symptoms sever enough to cause significant interference with activities of daily life.

Dean said care will be provided in a safe and effective way by a team of 18 health care professionals.

“The unit’s professional, multidisciplinary treatment team will guide the patient and family toward alternative coping skills and care giving skills, medication evaluation and the promotion of wellness.”

The treatment team will strive to achieve the optimum level of functioning for possible for each patient, he said.

Referrals to the senior behavioral care center may be made by physicians, family, friends, human service organizations, health care providers or the patient.

“The stay for each patients will be from 11 to 13 days,” Dean said. “At that time, the patient will return home or be referred to another care center.”

The Senior Behavioral Care Center is one of many projects planned for Troy Regional, Dean said including a cancer chemotherapy center.

“For those who might ask, why here? Why Troy Regional? The answer is our employees and their commitment to the highest quality of care,” Dean said. “For 49 years, the lights at this health care facility have not been off. We are always here for our community.”
