MONROE, La. – With a shortened week underway, Troy will look to rebound quickly after an 81-79 victory over Appalachian State on Monday with a matchup at ULM on Thursday. After Monday’s reschedule game due to snow and ice in the area against the Mountaineers, Troy (9-11, 3-4) displayed resilience after Saturday’s loss against Coastal Carolina by remaining calm down the stretch capitalized by a layup by Jordon Varnado with 2.7 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Four different players scored in double-digits fueled by double-double efforts from both Jordon Varnado (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Alex Hicks (12 points, 11 rebounds). It was the fourth double-double in the past six games for Hicks.
This past weekend also saw a remarkable achievement for Wesley Person as the senior broke the all-time Sun Belt record for most career 3-pointers at 324. The next milestone for the guard is the all-time Troy scoring record as he sits just 11 points shy of breaking Anthony Reed’s record of 1,865.
ULM (7-11, 1-6) has won just one Sun Belt game with two 15-point losses in the past three outings. The Warhawks had a narrow 55-52 loss at Texas State on Jan. 18 and then fell further back with a 71-55 loss at UT Arlington.
The Trojans are 10-7 all time against the Warhawks. The Trojans won their last meeting 73-72 in overtime in Monroe on February 13, 2017. In that game Kevin Baker hit a deep 3-pointer in the final seconds of overtime to give Troy the victory. The win sparked an 8-2 finish to the conference season en route to the Sun Belt Championship.
