The Johnson Center for the Arts is postponing a reception for Alabama folk artist Charlie Lucas of Selma and Pink Lily that would have been held tonight.

Wiley White, JCA exhibiton coordinator, said that based on latest weather reports, officials deicded it best to postpone the reception. A date has not yet been set.

Lucas’ exhibit, “Works of Charlie Lucas,” hangs in the JCA upper gallery where Lucas will share the process of and passion for his work. Each piece of artwork has a story and no visual artist tells a better story than nationally and internationally acclaimed folk artist Charlie Lucas.

White said Lucas is a folk artist but she prefers “found objects artist.”

“Charlie has been creating artwork from discarded objects since he was about four years old when he started making small toys for himself and his siblings.”

White said Lucas was soon building larger works.

Lucas’s great-grandfather was a blacksmith and he was fascinated by the work that he did and that is, perhaps, when the artist in Lucas began to take root.

“Later in life, Charlie was unable to work and asked God for guidance,” White said. “God told him to do art.”

Lucas’ art is inspired by his dreams. He used discarded items, a cutting torch and a welding machine to create art.

“Charlie can take almost any discarded item and turn it into art,” White said. “He is an amazing artist and a wonderful storyteller. We are honored to have him exhibit his work at the Johnson Center and look forward to hearing him talk about his art and his life tonight.”

The reception for Lucas is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend.
