The Troy City Schools Education Foundation has awarded a grant for tricycles and helmets for preschoolers at the Hank Jones Early Childhood Center.
Candice Howard-Shaughnessy, president of the TCS Education Foundation, said Elly Reeves wrote the grant so preschoolers would get a movement education experience outside the classroom.
“For the past three weeks, preschoolers at the Early Childhood Center have been in ‘tricycle safety’ training directed by physical education majors from the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion at Troy University,” Shaughnessy said. “The Troy City Schools Education Foundation fundraises to provide grants to teachers within the Troy City School system.
“Employees of the system are encouraged to enroll for payroll deduction and the board fundraises monthly. We recently had a casserole and bake sale on WTBF. Business and private donors also support the foundation.”
All money raised or donated goes toward funding grants for teachers.
“Last academic year, the board funded over $18,000 in grants and has already funded over $8,000 this academic year,” Shaughnessy said. “The board’s mission includes providing funding for educational opportunities and experiences above and beyond the classroom.”
Shaughnessy said those who would like to donate to the Troy City Schools Education Foundation, may do so by mailing a check payable to the foundation to P.O. Box 1233, Troy, Alabama 36081.
