Residents in Brundidge, Banks and Goshen wanting to sign up for Smart911 will now be able get help at Pike County EMA satellite offices.

EMA director Jeanna Barnes and representatives from Pike County 911 will set up offices one day each month beginning this August.

The commission on Monday asked Barnes to set up the offices as soon as possible in response to interest in those communities.

“They’re in more rural areas and it may be harder for them to come into Troy, so we want to make sure that we’re getting out to the public and making it easier for them,” Barnes said.

Barnes said this is the beginning of a major push to get sign ups for the program, which was officially implemented this June. So far, more than 300 people have signed up to take part in the free service, but commissioners said they want to quickly get that number into the thousands.

“I think we’ve had a good response so far, but we obviously want as many people a we can get to sign up for it,” Barnes said.

To accomplish that, Barnes is also looking to hold sign-up drives outside of businesses and establish an office in Troy once a month to be more visible to the public.

Barnes said more and more departments and agencies within the county are going to be using the system as well so that users will have many options for content they want to receive.

“I think that once it really starts with satellite offices and sign-up drives, people will see it’s easy to sign up and it’s free and the word of mouth will help it really start to grow,” Barnes said. “I’m optimistic.”

The Brundidge satellite office will at the former Dr. Goldman’s office on Gilmore Road next to Pike County High School. It will first be available on August 3 and on the first Thursday of every month thereafter.

The Goshen office will be located at Goshen Town Hall on the second Tuesday of each month beginning August 8.

The Banks office will be located at Town Hall on the second Wednesday of each month beginning August 9.

Each office will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
