New Ebenezer Baptist Church near Highland Home will host the well-known and popular gospel group, The Chuck Wagon Gang, at 7 p.m. Thursday and everyone who enjoys gospel music at its best is invited,
“The Chuck Wagon Gang is celebrating 80 years of old-fashioned, down-home, country-gospel music,” said Kenny Horn, church pastor. “The Chuck Wagon Gang was formed in 1935 by D.P. (Dad) Carter and his son Jim and daughters Rose and Anna. The group got their first radio break in 1936 as sponsored singers for Bewley Flour.”
The popular country gospel musical group signed with Columbia Records and remained with Columbia for 39 years. At one point the Chuck Wagon Gang was Columbia’s number one selling group with more than $39 million in record sales.
The Chuck Wagon Gang has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and the Grand Ole Opry. The “Gang” has been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Smithsonian Institution’s Classic American Recordings.
“We are honored to have the Chuck Wagon Gang at New Ebenezer Baptist Church and invite everyone to come and enjoy this night of old-time gospel music,” Horn said.
“There is no admission charge but a love offering will be taken.”
