Troy Music Study Club begins new year

The Troy Music Study Club began the new year with a meeting at the home of the president, Lyra Crapps, on January 23, 2017. After welcoming the members, Mrs. Crapps led in the repeating of the Federation Collect. 

Amanda Ford led the club in singing the Federation Hymn, “To Thee, Our God, Creator King,” words by Irene Foreman Williams set to LASST UNS ERFREUEN, arranged by R. Vaughn Williams, accompanied by Dovie Cutchen. The song of the month, “The Old Gray Mare,” was introduced by Joyce Dix and led by Amanda Ford, accompanied by Lyra Crapps.  Music in Poetry was presented by June Kendrick who read “Notes from Appalachia” by Don Sturgill.  After other reports by club officers, John Dew was introduced as program coordinator of “Appalachian Music.”

After giving a preview of Appalachian music, Dr. Dew sang and played the following songs, using mandolin, banjo, and guitar: Cripple Creek, Traditional Tune; My Home’s Across the Blue Ridge Mountains, recorded by Doc Watson; Sail Away Ladies, Sail Away, recorded by Joan Baez; I Never Will Marry, collected by Pete Seeger; Darlin’ Corey, collected by Pete Seeger; Wildwood Flower, by Maybelle Carter; Get You a Copper Kettle, collected by Alan Lomax

The meeting was adjourned and the hostesses, Lyra Crapps and Joyce Dix, served refreshments.

The Troy Music Study Club was organized in 1905 and has been affiliated with the Alabama Federation of Music Clubs and the National Federation of Music Clubs since 1907.
