HEADLAND – Jabronski Williams rushed for three touchdowns and 157 yards as Charles Henderson High rolled to a 44-10 over Headland Friday night in their last Class 5A, Region 2 contest of the season.

The Trojans have one regular season game remaining, this Thursday evening against Northview in Troy, before going on the road for the first round of the Class 5A playoffs at St. Paul.

For Coach Brad McCoy, the win was more about his team having better chemistry and doing all things correctly as a team, other than team or individual statistics.

“I was more concerned with how our team interacted during this football game, on the sideline, how the offense pulled for the defense and vise-versa, steadily trying to make improvements to our kicking game, and I think we got it,” said McCoy. “That’s something we are going to need as we go into Northview on Thursday with a short week, and St. Paul in the playoffs. Overall I think this is a complete team win, and something we have been badly needing at this point.”

CHHS senior linebacker Ashton Lewis, making a tackle here, blocked a punt to set up a touchdown and also intercepted a pass and returned in for a touchdown.

CHHS got on the board on their first possession when Williams busted a 57-yard TD run, and Cameron Bush provided the extra point for the 7-0 lead with 6:52 remaining in the first quarter.

Headland attempted to punt on their next series, but the punter could not get the kick off and CHHS recovered at the Headland 10-yard line. Two plays later Williams scored from the 8-yard line, and CHHS went up 13-0 as the extra point attempt was not successful due to an errant snap and hold.

Headland cut the lead to 13-7 with 7:01 remaining in the first half when senior running back Davion Stovall broke a 15-yard TD run, and John Gonzales kicked the extra point.

Each team swapped possessions, and when Headland was forced to punt, CHHS senior Ashton Lewis broke through to block the kick, and the Trojans took over at the Headland 13-yard line.

It only took CHHS one offensive play to get on the board again, as Williams added his third touchdown with 2:41 to go and Bush was true with the PAT for the 20-7 lead.

Gonzales added a 15-yard field goal one possession later, and the CHHS lead was 20-10 at the half.

The Trojans received the kickoff to start the third quarter, with WIlliams breaking a 54-yard run down to the Headland 11, and on fourth down Bush booted a 24-yard field goal to put the Trojans up 23-10.

Williams broke a 72-yard TD on the next CHHS possession, but it was called back due to a penalty, and Trojan junior Jared Wilson later picked up his teammate when he bulled in from 15 yards away for a touchdown, and with the Bush PAT the Trojans were up 30-10 with 1:30 to go in the third quarter.

Lewis, who blocked a punt earlier, intercepted the Headland quarterback at the Rams’ 12-yard line and took it in for a touchdown and a 37-10 score with 11:54 to go in the game.

The final CHHS score came at the 6:59 mark when Lowery lofted a 38-yard pass to senior Josh Roberts, and Bush was good as always for the 44-10 advantage.

Unofficial stats had Williams with 157 yards and three TD’s on 11 carries and Williams rushed for 75 yards and one TD on 10 attempts.

Stovall was the leading rusher for Headland with 69 yards while Vantwain Stokes gained 54 yards.

The Trojans, 6-3 and 4-2 in Region 2, will conclude the regular season this upcoming Thursday night when they host the Northview Cougars in Troy’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Headland slipped to 3-6 overall with the loss and 0-6 in Region 2 play.
