Charles Henderson High secured a Class 5A playoff berth and also honored past Trojans on Legacy Night, in a 28-0 win over Rehobeth Friday in Troy’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Trojans, 5-3 on the year and 3-2 in Region 2 competition, travel to Headland in their final region contest next Friday. Carroll of Ozark, Eufaula, CHHS and Greenville will likely be the four teams representing Region 2 in the playoffs.

Friday’s game was not the neatest or most perfect game the Trojans have played this year, but CHHS Head Coach Brad McCoy pointed to the scoreboard after the game as he addressed his team, and told them he was proud of their effort, and accomplishments.

“This was a region win, and a shutout on top of that,” McCoy said after meeting with his team. “I was very proud of our defense. We came out and did so many things right. A lot of things we challenged our guys on during the week – thinking and guarding against complacency – we came out and played a quality football game in spite of penalties. We’re going to get back and examine all of that, we’re going to address it and we’re going to correct it.”

The Trojans got on the board on their first possession of the game when senior running back Jabronski Williams capped a five-play, 60-yard drive with his touchdown carry from the 1-yard line. Cameron Bush nailed the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 8:15 remaining in the first quarter. A big play in the drive was a 41-yard run by sophomore quarterback D.Q. Toney to the Rehobeth 4-yard line.

CHHS went up 14-0 minutes later when Williams again took it in from the 5-yard line, and Bush’s kick put the Trojans ahead with 5:20 to go in the first quarter.

Jared Wilson bulled his way in for a 6-yard carry with 1:08 remaining in the second quarter, and Bush added the PAT for the 21-0 advantage which the Trojans carried into the half.

The Trojans did not score again until the fourth quarter, when Wilson broke a 25-yard run, and the extra point by Bush was good for the 28-0 lead with 1:55 to go in the game, which the Trojans held for the final.

Seven different CHHS players ran the ball on the evening, with Williams picking up 71 yards on nine carries and two TD’s, Toney rushed for 67 yards, Wilson picked up 48 on seven attempts and had two TD’s, and Bryson Gandy picked up 32 yards on four carries.

McCoy believes the win Friday secures a playoff berth regardless of a win or loss at Headland.

“This pretty much guarantees us a playoff spot,” said McCoy. “There is pretty much nothing that can happen next week that will alter us being No. 3. We are at Headland next week, and close out the regular season the last week at home against Northview.”

At the conclusion of the game, the Trojans honored many alumni with Legacy Night, as over 40 CHHS athletes played in honor or memory of former Trojans or individuals close to the program. Those CHHS players presented jerseys with the number and name of the player to the alumni or a family member in honor or memory of that former athlete.

“I think what is neat about it is we had over 40 kids that played in honor or memory of people that have played here,” said McCoy. “This is something we can continue to do, because we will never reach out to everybody. That’s what’s positive about it. It’s a way to connect our current players with past players. We get them on the same field they played on, but you also get to share some experiences with some of these families that have lost their children in certain ways, and this is a way for us to give back. It’s hard on them but it’s something our guys have bought into this week, and understood what the term “Legacy” means, and something I hope will be great for years on end.”
