About 100 people gathered on Friday at the Studio to celebrate the service of District 1 Councilman Charlie “Sarge” Dunn, who is retiring at the end of this term.
WSFA anchor Tonya Terry facilitated the program in which several people spoke about Dunn and his service.
Terry, a former neighbor of Dunn’s, had some kind words herself.
“I grew up next to Sarge,” Terry said. “He was always a good example to us.”
Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., chancellor at Troy University, praised Dunn’s military service. Dunn served 22 years in the Army, including during the Korean and Vietnam wars.
“Freedom is not free,” Hawkins said. “We value these patriots that are willing to put on their uniforms and fight for our country.
“We miss people at all levels that have had the kind of experience that you have had,” Hawkins told Dunn.
“He’s the best Marine I ever knew,” Dunn joked.
Mayor Jason Reeves talked about Dunn’s service on the city council.
“Sarge has been rock solid for the City of Troy,” Reeves said. “A lot of things have happened because Sarge kept after it. Mr. Dunn cared about everybody. He is a great example and someone I look up to. I learned a great deal from Mr. Dunn.”
The mayor and council then revealed a gift of a rocking chair to Dunn, complete with his name and the city logo.
District 4 Councilman John Witherington, who is also retiring at the end of this term, recalled a story about Dunn dressing up for a photo shortly after being elected.
“Mayor Lunsford told me to tell Mr. Charlie to dress up in a suit for a photo,” Witherington said. “He showed up in his uniform. I said ‘I thought you were going to wear a suit.’ Sarge said ‘This is the my best one.””
District 2 Councilman Greg Meeks noted that Dunn was a “true gentleman,” and that Dunn has been dressing up ever since that first day.
“There’s no doubt about it, he’s also the best-dressed,” Meeks said.
District 3 Councilman Marcus Paramore added that he was appreciative of Dunn’s service for both the city and the country.
The Colley Senior Complex also thanked Dunn for his service and presented him with a portrait.
Former Mayor Jimmy Lunsford and two members of Dunn’s nonprofit organization Charlie’s Angels also paid respects to Dunn.
“What a blessing,” Dunn said. “It has truly been an honor to serve the people of Troy and Pike County. Every concern you’ve brought to me, I’ve tried to address it. I’m glad to have had the pleasure and honor to serve District 1 and the people of Troy. Thank all of you for your kind words. I feel honored to have had this opportunity.”
