The Goshen offense struck early and often Friday night, cruising to a 48-7 region romp of Zion Chapel.

The Eagles used a quick strike attack, scoring three touchdowns in a span of 3:18 in the first quarter to blow the game open early. The explosive offensive maintained the pace throughout the night by notching four one-play scoring drives.

Zach Alford led the way on the ground for Goshen with 182 yards and five touchdowns. Four of Alford’s scoring runs were of the one-play variety.

Damien Passmore added two rushing scores of his own in the second half.

“They are all capable of that (one-play scores),” said Snyder. “We know the potential is there. We have several different running backs that can do some special things.”

Snyder also gave high praise to his defense, especially the defensive line.

The Eagle defense forced four Zion Chapel fumbles and dropped the Rebels for a loss on 11 different plays.

“I am excited about what I saw tonight,” Snyder said. “The finally did what we have been asking them to do: fire off the ball and stay low. We were able to get some penetration and make some plays against what we think is one of the better offensive lines we will see.”

Zion’s lone score of the game came midway through the third quarter on a 28-yard rumble by Hunter Oswald

The win moves Goshen to 5-1 overall, while the loss drops Zion to 2-4.

Despite the lop-sided win, Snyder feels the Eagles have quite a few things to sure up as the season enters the home stretch.

“We need to be a little more balanced on offense, and need to throw it a little better,” said Snyder. “We are still missing some blocks and assignments and also not being real fundamental at times. We still have some things to work on.”

Zion Chapel hosts Ariton next week, and Goshen celebrates homecoming against Central of Hayneville.

Both games are set for 7 p.m. kickoffs.
