Troy’s fifth annual WOD for Water event will be held next month to raise money and awareness for the need for clean water in other parts of the world.

The acronym stands for “workout of the day,” a CrossFit competition that people can register for to raise money for Neverthirst. Neverthirst is a faith-based organization based out of Birmingham that builds clean water wells in third-world countries.

Jason Jones, Derek Irons and C.C. Matthews brought the event to Troy in 2012 after seeing one in Birmingham.

“We fundraise by getting donations from people year-round,” Jones said. “We’ve raised $200,000 in our first four years.”

Every year since it has been held in Troy, the fundraising goal has been exceeded. Last year WOD for Water Troy raised $83,000 after setting a $75,000 goal.

This year, Jones said, they’re setting the bar even higher with a goal of raising $100,000.

The event will be sponsored and hosted by CrossFit Ilium, a local CrossFit gym.

The competition will be split into three parts: prescribed weight for advanced competitors; scaled weight for average CrossFitters; and a beginner version.

“You can come out to participate even if it’s the first time ever doing CrossFit in your life,” Jones said.

Competitors will lift Jerry Cans filled with water to represent what millions of people across the world must do for water.

“It shows what people in third-world countries do every day to get water,” Jones said. “It’s not even clean water. It’s dirt water and they walk miles to get it.”

There will be four total divisions of the competitive workout, one for each men and women in both the scaled weight and prescribed weight.

The winners are determined by a point system that takes into account the amount of weight lifted and how quickly the workout is done.

The competition will begin on October 8 at 8 a.m. at CrossFit Ilium and will last throughout most of the day. CrossFit Ilium is located at 208 Wiley Street.
