The Christian Love Center in Troy is responding to the continuing need for assistance in the aftermath of flooding in Louisiana this month that has left thousands homeless and caused more than $30 million in damages.
The catastrophic flood is being described by the Red Cross at the worst natural disaster to strike the United States since Hurricane Sandy four years ago
Lawanda Bell, center youth coordinator, said the theme of the Christian Love Center is “Make a difference.”
“We want to make a difference in the lives of these people who have lost everything,” she said. “Hundreds of people are having the wear the same clothes day after day and many have no shoes. We want to meet some of those needs.”
Already, more than 500 pairs of shoes, racks of clothing and boxes of bottled water, toiletry items and energy drinks have been donated and will be delivered to those in need next week.
“Plato’s Closet in Montgomery, as always, is a strong supporter of the Christian Love Center and has generously donated items,” Bell said. “The people of Troy have been very generous. The SAAC athletic association at Troy University has donated a huge number of pairs of shoes and many of them are athletic shoes. People have responded to our facebook page in an unbelievable way. Together we can make a difference in the lives of the victims of the disaster.”
Bell said the generosity and caring of the people of Pike County is evident in their giving. “The attitude is to do what you can, while you can,” she said. “And, I can’t say enough about Plato’s Closet. It’s always open to us.”
Although one room at the Christian Love Center is nearly filled with donations, Bell said the items will meet only a small need.
“We will accept items until 5:30 p.m. on Monday,” she said. “We especially needed bottled water, Gatorade and toiletry items. Some people just drop donations off at the center door at 223 Segars Street in Troy. Any and all donations are greatly needed and we do appreciate the support of the community.”
Bell said 100 percent of the donated items will go to the flood victims and will be delivered by representatives from the Christian Love Center.
“This is a time to give back and to show love,” she said.
