Fifth Saturday on tap

This Saturday will be the fifth Saturday of the month, which means there will be music, games, food and fun on The Square.

Music will be the biggest draw at the event, with an open mic from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and a free concert performed by Lenny Trawick from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Leigh Anne Windham, community services coordinator for the City of Troy, said that the open mic is open to all musical performers whether they’re soloists, duets, trios or whatever other category they may fall into.

Lenny Trawick is a Brundidge native who regularly performs at venues such as the Old Barn in Goshen, Collier’s in Brundidge and Sips on the Square in Troy.

Trawick oversaw the open mic at the very first 5th Saturday meeting last year and will return this Saturday to host the open mic and concert.

“It’s usually a lot of fun because I never know who’s going to show up and a lot of my guitar students show up to perform,” Trawick said. “I’m just hoping it’s not so awfully hot this Saturday. It’ll be a lot of fun and I’m hoping for a good turnout.”

Trawick said he usually plays some jazz and blues with some slow country mixed in. “I try to play something that all ages can enjoy,” he said.

Trawick started playing music 60 years ago at the age of 5 when he began playing gospel music with his family and he’s never stopped. A few years ago, he began offering guitar lessons mostly to kids, but also to adults.

“I really enjoy teaching the kids,” Trawick said. “I teach adults too, but most of my students are about 7 years old to 20 years old.”

Windham said the event is a great opportunity for residents to have a good time together while enjoying downtown shops and restaurants.

“We encourage everybody to eat at one of the restaurants while they’re downtown for the event and check out the shops,” Windham said.

The 5th Saturday events began in Troy last June as a joint project of the City of Troy and the Pike County Chamber of Commerce.
