The Waker Foundation will sponsor a three-day Back to School event on August 5, 6 and 7 in Troy that will include a 5K run, a soapbox derby and live music, food, contests and free school supplies.
The Waker Foundation is based in Washington D.C. and locally in Ozark.
Glenda Kelly of Troy is the administrative assistant of the foundation and is spearheading the Back to School Event in downtown Troy.
“The Waker Foundation is excited to bring the Back to School event to Troy,” Kelly said. “There will be free school supplies for students but it will also be three days of fun leading up to the beginning of school.”
The Back to School event will kick off with a 5K Glow Run on Friday night, August 5. The run will begin on the square in downtown Troy and follow a route along Elm Street route that loops back to the square. The entry fee for the run is $25 and includes a T- shirt and goody bag.
On Saturday, the featured event will be a soapbox derby. The soapbox cars will have a fast track down the Elm Street hill and will provide a thrill a minute for the racers and for those who line the track.
Kelly said the foundation is looking for sponsors for the cars and for drivers. There is a $25 entry fee.
On Sunday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m., the downtown square in Troy will be bustling with activity.
“We’ll have live music provided by local entertainers throughout the afternoon and activities for the entire family,” Kelly said. “We’ll have different contests for the kids and young people. On the parking lot next to Synco Drugs, we’ll have a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. The bookmobile will be on site and we’ll also have a health fair where people can come and get their blood pressure checked and receive beneficial health information.
“Of course, we’ll have food vendors so we invite everyone to spend a fun afternoon in downtown Troy.”
Free school supplies will be distributed to students in grades K-12 as long as available.
The Waker Foundation is looking for volunteers to assist with the local events. Anyone interested is asked to call Glenda Kelly at 334-372-3426.
Proceeds from the Back to School event will be used to fund local community programs sponsored by the Waker Foundation.
